Marking its 50th anniversary this year, Sino Group commemorates five decades of community-building with the unveiling of a permanent site-specific art piece, Time Loop, partnered with the internationally acclaimed British designer Paul Cocksedge. The art piece is installed at the entrance of Yue Man Square (YM2) and gifted by the Group to the Kwun Tong community via the Urban Renewal Authority.
Time Loop is inspired by its surroundings in YM2 and is designed to reflect the ongoing transformation of the area over the last half century, as well as Kwun Tong’s optimistic spirit. It symbolises the neighbourhood’s unique charm and ongoing transformation of the area through its likeness to the infinity symbol. Its looping form is a gesture towards both the past and the future, and a mark of respect for Hong Kong’s history as well as a celebration of its constant change and pace of life. The form is a continuous loop to convey an ongoing movement, embodying a sense of motion and change. By incorporating the sustainably sourced timber, grain and texture are added to the static piece, depicting a metaphor for Hong Kong’s own multi-layered history and landscape where old and new elements co-exist side by side. It is also engraved with an ‘infinite’ poem in two languages, which reflects on the passage of time.
Paul Cocksedge comments, ‘I’m very proud of the local artisans that have worked on producing this ambitious piece. I can’t wait to see the human form bringing life to the artwork. When people sit on Time Loop they become part of the movement of the city, as well as its transformation. It reflects a place that has endured for many years, but remains constantly moving and evolving. And that’s the symbolism of the form.’
